Are you looking to create a sustainable and productive orchard? Incorporating chickens into your orchard can help maximize its output. Free range chickens can provide a range of benefits to a permaculture orchard, from pest control to fertilizer and eggs. Read on to find out how to make the most of free range chickens in your permaculture orchard.

What is a permaculture orchard?

A permaculture orchard is a type of orchard that uses permaculture principles to maximize the health, productivity, and diversity of the orchard. Permaculture principles are a set of guidelines that can be used to create a sustainable, self-sufficient ecosystem. These principles include working with nature, using renewable resources, and creating diversity in the system. Other principles include using organic practices, creating closed loops, and creating self-sustaining systems. By utilizing permaculture principles, it is possible to create a system that is self-regulating and more resilient to environmental changes.

A permaculture orchard is designed to have multiple layers of plantings, including trees, shrubs, and other perennial plants, along with annual and edible plants, to create a self-sustaining and productive system. Permaculture orchards typically use companion planting, water catchment, and other strategies to increase sustainability and maximize the output of the orchard.

Our Permaculture Orchard Goals

Our permaculture orchard is small but serves two goals for our farm. We want to provide our chickens with more shade in the summer while at the same time providing another source of farm fresh produce. We selected six trees of three different varieties from our local nursery – Fig, Apple, and Pear. You must ensure that the trees are an adequate distance apart when planting them. In the case of apple and pear trees, approximately 25 feet is the proper distance between trees. A quick internet search will provide the proper distance for the trees you select for your orchard.

Combining your Flock of Hens with your Permaculture Orchard

Free range chickens can be incorporated into a permaculture orchard in several ways. One way is to use the chickens to help with pest control by allowing them to roam the orchard and eat insects that can damage the trees and plants. Chickens help fertilize the soil by providing extra nitrogen and other nutrients as they scratch around the orchard for food. Finally, chickens can provide valuable eggs to supplement food production from the orchard.

Pest Control

One of the key benefits of including chickens in a permaculture orchard is pest control. By allowing the chickens to roam freely around the orchard, they can help reduce the populations of insects that can damage the trees and plants. The chickens’ scratching and foraging can also help reduce weeds and create a healthy environment for the trees and plants.

Fertilizer

Chickens can also provide an additional source of fertilizer for the orchard. From their scratching and foraging, chickens provide extra nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil to help promote healthy growth in the trees and plants. In addition, their droppings can provide an additional source of fertilizer, and the chickens can help to spread the fertilizer around the orchard.

Eggs

Finally, the chickens can provide a source of eggs to supplement the food produced from the orchard. Not only do eggs provide a source of nutrition, they can also be sold or traded to help support the orchard. In addition, the eggs can be used as a form of barter, allowing the orchard owner to trade eggs for other resources or materials.

Incorporating chickens into your permaculture orchard can help maximize its productivity while also providing an additional source of food and income. With careful planning, you can create a sustainable and productive orchard that is both aesthetically pleasing and rewarding. Be sure to research the local regulations for keeping chickens in your area, and consider the space requirements of the birds when designing your orchard. With the right setup, you can create a permaculture orchard that is both beautiful and productive.
